Rajah & Tann Laos forms alliance with Phongsavanh Group to expand in Lao PDR

Rajah & Tann (Laos) Co Ltd., a member firm of Rajah & Tann Asia, announced today that it has formed an alliance with Laotian conglomerate Phongsavanh Group to expand its operations in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

One of the largest and most established business conglomerates in Lao PDR, the Phongsavanh Group has interests in banking and financial institutions, oil and petroleum products and related businesses, trading and logistics.

The alliance will see the Phongsavanh Group, founded over four decades ago by its namesake family, provide market intelligence and business development direction to Rajah & Tann Laos. However, it will not be involved in the law firm’s day-to-day operations.

Mr Lee Eng Beng, Chairperson of Rajah & Tann Asia, said: “We are honoured to have Phongsavanh Group as our partner in Lao PDR.

“This partnership will deepen Rajah & Tann Asia’s connections and resources across Southeast Asia, and we look forward to learning and benefitting from the strong industry expertise, experience and capabilities of Phongsavanh Group.”

Mr Lee Hock Chye, Managing Partner of Rajah & Tann Laos, added: “Lao PDR is one of the fastest growing economies in the region and we are delighted to be working with the Phongsavanh Group to serve clients in Lao PDR in particular and Indochina in general.

“This collaboration will allow us to leverage on the Phongsavanh Group’s networks and expertise in Lao PDR, and for them to have access to the highly rated legal services that Rajah & Tann Asia is known for.”

Mr Thedlakhone Douangsonthi, Vice Chairman of Phongsavanh Group, said: “The Phongsavanh Group is always on the lookout for opportunities and partners to expand in Lao PDR and beyond. We are confident that this alliance with Rajah & Tann, Southeast Asia’s largest legal network, will help advance our business objectives and position us for future growth.”

Based in Vientiane, Rajah & Tann’s office in Lao PDR was established in 2010 and is helmed by lawyers with experience in Laotian laws. Its team of lawyers advises clients on a broad range of transactions in Lao PDR and the wider Indochina region, including banking and finance, commercial litigation, construction projects, intellectual property, restructuring and insolvency.

The Lao PDR office has won several accolades since it was established, including “Laos Law Firm of the Year” by Asialaw Regional Awards 2019, “Highly Recommended Firm” in General Business Law from Asialaw Profiles and “Leading Firm” by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific in 2019. It has also been recognised for its well-established finance and corporate practices by IFLR1000 and for general business law by Chambers Asia-Pacific.

In recent years, the firm has been involved in several large-scale cross-border projects. They include the financing of a loan provided by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China to state-owned energy generator Électricité du Laos for the expansion of the national grid, and for Hong Kong-headquartered telecommunications equipment company Comba Telecom to enter the domestic telecommunications market through the acquisition of a majority stake in Lao state-owned telecommunication provider, Enterprise of Telecommunications Laos.
